About Artist Melinda May

I have been painting with watercolor for 30 years. I began painting, working with a mentor when I was 14. I studied painting at The Academy of Fine Art in Rome, completing the second year. My BFA is from the Academy of Art University.

I paint fulltime.

Previously, working as an illustrator, I did a range of work from botanical illustration, to surface design, to paintings of mail order gardens for a horticulture corporation.

My work in all of these genres has greatly informed the personal work I’m doing now.

I love animals. I’ve done cat rescue, in various forms, for many years. My most serious paintings are of feral cats.

Another interest is working with children on neighborhood projects. The pictures below show two of these projects: a community children’s garden I founded and a mosaic, on the wall fronting the garden, at the end of our street.

I have enjoyed teaching many years as a part-time instructor at the Academy of Art University, teaching Illustration, Watercolor and Color Theory. Currently I am teaching Color Theory, one day a week.
